Smells like Rape Culture.

"...And, Germany scores yet again! Germany five, Brazil nil."

FIFA World-Cup 2014 Semi Finals.
An extraordinary match between Germany and Brazil, with Germany defeating Brazil by an amazing 7-1.

My news-feed on Facebook was, obviously, flooded with status updates on the match. Brazilian supporters speaking of disappointment, and German supporters ecstatic by their outstanding performance.
Somewhere, in this ecstasy, people came up with stuff like- "BRAZILIAN TEAM JUST GOT GANG RAPED BY THE GERMAN TEAM. THIS IS HILARIOUS"

Football is a sport. It is natural for people to derive pleasure in the opponent team's defeat. Sometimes, we also tend to make fun of their defeat in our arrogance. I guess that's all acceptable.
Maybe such a one-sided match as a World-Cup semi-final WAS funny.
However, my dear people, GANG RAPE is NOT funny.
Let me spell it out to you:-

RAPE IS NOT SOMETHING TO BE JOKED ABOUT.

Have we really become this numb to what we say?
Do we really not realize what we are implying?
We are implying that the RAPIST is SUPERIOR. The rapist is the winner. We are JUSTIFYING RAPE AND CHEERING IT?
The rape victim is the defeated team who just didn't play well? The rape victim is INFERIOR? The rape victim is DEFEATED?
We, with our sick rape jokes, are validating rape. Do we not realize that?

We are implying that human rights and a football match are at par. After all, that's what the equation is right?
Rape= Violation (loss) of human rights=  Defeat (Loss) in a football game.
Is this how important a game is for us?

Then, I am told that I over-analyze and freak out at small insignificant things.
Smells like Rape Culture.

Rape jokes aren't just insensitive. They add to the rape culture, where we shrug and say, "That's how things are."

Do we not realize that?
