Law School.
I had imagined the campus of law school to be a reflection of my (disappointed) idealistic mind. I had expected aspiring lawyers to have sensitivity and consideration as a part of their extremely sharp and logical minds.
I was anticipating the perfect combination of an idealistic and practical atmosphere, where I could learn, grow, and become a better and wiser human being.
Disappointments.
"Dude, you're blonde!"
Sitting on the dining table of our mess, my group of friends and I were having a gala time, making the best out of hostel life. Squeals of laughter on stupid jokes filled the air, and the stress which pressured us down all day long, evaporated into this air.
Though, the 'stuck-up' idiot that I am, lost my comfort the moment I heard the words quoted above.
On gently telling my friend that, that wasn't cool, the response I received from most of the people on the table were:-
These people are very smart, and are actually people with hearts of gold.
However, such incidents are just a reflection of the numbness in our speech, the slack in our vocabulary, and the lack of will-power.
This conversation ended with- "Okay. You win, we lose. We will use 'Bimbo' instead."
We mock superstitious people, or people who are afraid of the dark. Why? Because we can't seem to find the rationale behind their actions.
Pray, why shouldn't people mock us for replacing 'stupid' with 'blonde'? Where is the logic? Where is the science? Where is the rationale? Where is the THOUGHT?
Agreed, that we are joking, and that we don't really believe that blonde people are dumb, but why do our jokes have to pull another group of people down? Why do we have to laugh at someone else's expense? Are we really that shallow?
It's not just about 'blonde'.
I don't think I need to mention it, I find several homophobic jokes floating around the campus. Also, with the rich cultural diversity our college has, I find a lot of judgements being made about a particular person, because, you know? Stereotypes. (What rationale is your legal opinion going to hold, eh? OMG, JUST MADE A LEGAL REFERENCE.)
Words, my dear friends, are underrated.
Let's choose them wisely, shall we?

- You're not blonde. Why are you getting offended?
(Because empathy doesn't exist in the legal dictionary.) - Someone's been on Facebook too much. "Breaking Stereotypes".
(Because being on social network, and inculcating good things in my life is being 'lifeless'. ) - We're just kidding, dude.
(Because jokes are supposed to be derogatory.) - But, but, but, blonde IS the extreme form of dumb. Isn't it?
(Because the colour of your hair determines your IQ. Too much Biology for me to handle.)
